Not yet 30, Praisy initially wanted to be a chef but won a bursary to study winemaking at Elsenburg Agricultural College in Stellenbosch. Food’s loss is wine’s gain, as Praisy uses her acute sense of taste to blend the renowned range of Zonnebloem red wines. She was the first female protégée adopted by the Cape
Winemakers Guild, and relished her experience of being mentored by some of the country’s most talented winemakers.
Tour operator, taster and wine educationist were not what Karen would have seen in her crystal ball two decades ago, but that’s what she’s doing now. Her parents are to blame for her interest, having handed over their wine collection to her when they downsized years ago. Now she runs informative and fun courses for those wanting to learn more, as well as guiding tourists around South Africa’s beautiful vineyards.
